6 Ways to Reduce Fear and Get Yourself Out There

Being brave takes courage. Maybe being brave is hard because we know what happens to chickens when they stick their necks out.

When you’re feeling wobbly in the knees and wonder why it seems easier for others, show yourself a little love and consider this. The world needs you. Things aren’t always what they seem.

Here are a few considerations and related theme songs to remind you to be brave.

1) Don’t Compare Your Inside with Someone’s Outside

This is one of my favorites from a wise friend, Kristina. We often compare our tender insides to someone’s outer appearance. That would be like comparing an egg yoke to an egg shell, apples to oranges.

What I am by Will.i.am

“I’m gonna keep my head up high
Keep on reaching high
Never gonna quit
I’ll be getting stronger.”

When you need some inside lovin’:

2) Don’t Compare Your Worst to Someone’s Best

Jeanna at Fiercely Fetching shared this article. Be gentle with yourself. All your parts and mine deserve some respect and appreciation.

More Beautiful You by Jonny Diaz

“There could never be a more beautiful you
Don’t buy the lies, disguises and hoops, they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you”

When you need to be reminded just how beautiful you are:

3) Follow a Model if You Need Some Help

In this article, Tom demonstrates how to have a difficult conversation with compassion. Role models are inspirational. They help us get started in the right direction.

A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker

“What would you think if sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key.”

When you’re feeling off the mark:

4) Light Your Match in the Midst of a Roaring Blaze

Ramsay Taplin wrote this article about feeling small. You don’t have to be the first or the biggest. Someone needs you. If you’re the stimulus for my “Aha! Moment” it will never be small to me.

Shine All Your Light by Amy Grant

“Just do what you can
Clap with one hand
And shine all your light in the sun”

When you’re feeling small:

5) Remember that Perspective is Everything

Tara Mohr shared this about being on The Today Show for the fourth time. Despite the nervousness, lack of sleep, and feelings of stress; she realized there are only about 3 minutes of stress. The rest is pretty relaxing.

Keep on the Sunny Side by The Whites

“Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us ev’ry day, it will brighten all the way
If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life”

When your perspective needs tweaking:

6) Embrace Your I Am Good Enough Self

One day I compared my inside to someone’s outside. Side-by-side, my needs improvement and their mastered. I was a million miles away in my mind from where I wanted to be. Maybe I should give up. Then Tom sent me a song. It cheered me up. It gave me courage.

Brave by Sara Bareilles

“Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is”

When you need the courage to do your thing, to be yourself:

What gives you courage? What’s worth sticking your neck out for? Rather, what’s worth sticking your neck up for? You’re not a chicken.
